Abstract

Esophagea/ cancer has high incidence in Uruguay
and is general/y detected when it has reached an
advanced stage of the disease. This latter fact determines
that surgica/ treatment be undertaken in
the majority of cases mere/y far palliative purposes.
May are the techniques proposed to this effect.
This paper describes the lvor Lewis procedure applied
in the city of Florida (Uruguay), over a 32 year
period.
lt describes a first series of 43 patients operated
over the period 1970-1986, in which morbidity
amounted to 60%, mortality was 11. 62% and overa/!
surviva/ was 20. 2 months.
