The author has observed 687 patients with esopha~ geal cancer since 1948, he has operated 569 oí 1hem. He has carried out 287 low reseetions, 117 high resections; 08 esophago-fundic by-pass operations and 107 palliative lntul'ations. The other 118 paUents were looked upon as untreatablcs. Out of the 162 resections carried out in the 1967-1972 periodo 57 % survived after 2 y ears snd 10 'X> a!ter 5 years. The patients with esophago-fundic by-pass operations showed sn average survlval of 14 months and operative rnortnllty was 3 c,;, . The average survival oC the intubated patients was 8 months, ,vith an operative mortality oI 6.8 ';~ . The di!ferent tretament adopted for the tumors oí low and high csophagus are dcfined. with a brief discussion about tbe surgical techniques \Ised.
