amputationAbstract
Retrospective study of 100 amputations at the Hospital de Clínicas in the period 1977-1980 evidencing the incidence of poor risk factors in amputations due to vascular problems in lower extremities.
Prevíous treatment, especially vascular surgery in patients that have had a limb amputated has not delayed amputation for more than five years and in fifty per cent of the patients amputation occurs immediately alter vascular surgery. There exist a disproportionated percentage of amputation of the thigh as compared with amputation of the leg, evidencing error in the approach to the problem and technique employed. A High percentage of mortality is reported (15%), sharply increasing in emergency amputations (60%). Rehabilitation is not satisfactorily conducted there being an extremely low percentage of self-sufficient amputees.
