Abstract

The paper analyzes retrospectively 93 septic patients interned in a poiivalent I. C . U. over a 5 • year - period. 37 of these patients ( 40 % ) presented hepatobiliary
alterations. 9 of these presented causative, or concomitant with septicemia, obstructive biliary canal pathology and 2 suffered from prior chronic hepatopathy.
Nevertheless, 26 out of this series of patients presented hepatic alteration not connected with obstruction of the biliary tract, pre - existant hepatopathy, hepatic
suppuration or hemolysis. The authors conclude that the causing agent of this hepatopathy is sepsis resulting from as yet undetermined mechanisms without bacterial colonization of liver.
